Nuneaton Town round out 2025 with a first league meeting with Coventry United in an A444 derby on Saturday afternoon.

What a year it has been for the fledgling Nuneaton Town. A first league title for the town in 26 years as they sealed the Midland League Division 1 at the first time of asking, and were promoted to the United Counties League Premier South. A cup final at Walsall's Bescot Stadium unfortunately didn't go our way but it was a great evening out nonetheless. And Nuneaton aim to end the year as they started it, top of the table. 2025 will be seen as a memorable year in times to come.

Although it is the first league meeting, Nuneaton Town and Coventry United have met once already this season in the league cup, United providing a tough challenge as Town ran out 1-0 winners, and the 7th placed side are expected to prove as tough an opponent this time as they try to push for a play off place.

United's 7th place comes from 10 wins, 5 draws and 4 defeats, and recently signed Cody Mullan from Town. Other former Town or Borough players that could feature include Chris Cox and Ben Vallance, however its Ryan Harkin and Cameron Dunn to watch out for, with 19 and 15 goals this season respectively. United also still remain in the FA Vase, where they will meet Town's conquerors GNG Oadby Town in the 4th Round on 17th January. With the return fixture on Easter Monday, and March making the visit to the Butts Arena next week, Coventry United could have a say in the title race.

Nuneaton Town remain top thanks to March Town United failing to knock them from the summit with their game last Saturday, despite winning 4-1 at home to Daventry Town it wasn't enough, and Nuneaton remain in front ahead of their crunch clash in 2 weeks and are looking for a 16th win in 21 games.

Will it be derby day delight for Town?

History:

Established in 2013 as a protest to Coventry City having to play in Northampton, having taken over Coventry Spartans, Coventry United have gone from strength to strength in that time. Earning 3 straight promotions in their first 3 seasons to reach Step 5, they played at several grounds in that time including the Alan Higgs Centre, and Sphinx Drive, and moved to the Butts Park Arena, home of Coventry Rugby Club, in 2017.

United have settled into life in Step 5 and were, until Sphinx were promoted to Step 4, Coventry's top non league team. Current Nuneaton Town joint managers Darren Acton and Russell Dodd were briefly managers of Coventry United from November 2021 until the end of the year.
