Nuneaton Town head to Northamptonshire on Saturday afternoon as they face Daventry Town, looking to bounce back from a first league defeat this season.
Nuneaton became the final side in the division to lose as they went down to 3 late goals at Easington Sports in soggy conditions on Wednesday night, missing a chance to go 7 clear at the top. However they still have their 4 point lead and will be looking to at least maintain it against a side bottom of the form table.
Daventry Town made a blistering start to the season, thrashing Hinckley 6-0 on the opening day and winning the following 3 to make it a perfect 12 points out of 12, however they've picked up just 2 points from the next 9 games to slip from the top of the pile to 15th. They have had back to back 4-0 home defeats against Aylestone Park and Histon, whilst also losing 2-0 to Coventry United on Tuesday evening at the Butts Park Arena.
Daventry Town are one of the few teams a Nuneaton Town/Borough side has met before, the last occasion being 6 years ago when a hattrick from Callum Powell saw Boro through in a Southern League Cup contest.
With both sides looking to find a much needed win, the away support will be needed once again.
History:
Daventry Town affectionately known as the Purple Army, were formed in 1886 as a local club but only played in local leagues until 1987 when they switched to the Northants Combination, and earned promotion to the United Counties Division 1 in 1990. They left their former ground The Hollow in the same year and moved to their current home. Their ground was devastated by fire in the 2005-06 season after it became victim to an arson attack, but after a takeover they survived, and reached the Southern League Division 1 Central in 2010, losing only in the play off final in the 2010-11 season.
In 2013-14 they reached the FA Cup first round for the first ever time, losing away at Chesterfield. Despite this they suffered financial troubles in 2016 and took voluntary relegation to Step 6. They won 2 promotions to reach the Northern Premier League Division 1 Midlands, but were relegated at the end of the 2022-23 season. This will be their third season at this level.
