Nuneaton Town head up Butthole Lane to face Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday afternoon.

An improved performance on Tuesday saw Nuneaton compete with the defacto league leaders Wellingborough Town, only losing 1-0 to a fortunate late goal, with new goalkeeper Gabriel Bajrami having an excellent debut.

The defeat saw Nuneaton fall to 18th in the table, but sit just 5 points behind their 6th placed opponents ahead of Saturday's game, with the opportunity to close to two.

It is the first competitive meeting in over a century, with a goalless friendly in 2021 being any Nuneaton Town or Borough side's last visit. The sides have never met in a league game.

About our opponents:

Shepshed Albion were formed in the late 1800s and joined the Leicestershire Senior League in 1907. Changing their name to Shepshed Charterhouse in 1975, they made their way up to the Southern League in the 1980s, and appointed Martin O'Neill as manager in 1989, who would go on to manage Leicester City and Celtic amongst others. But after financial difficulties and a change back to Albion in 1992, the club was ended, and Shepshed Dynamo was formed in 1994, with the name coming from the assistance provided by nearby Loughborough Dynamo.

After some success in the early years, Shepshed were relegated to Step 5 in 2012, remaining there until 2021, when they were promoted back to the Northern Premier League Division 1 Midlands, where they have remained since.

They have played at the Dovecote stadium since 1891, and the road name Butthole Lane can be attributed to archery being a former use of the ground. Their name Dynamo comes from Dynamo Moscow (via Loughborough) and features the same 'D' design on the crest. Dynamo or Dinamo was the name given to the Soviet state run sports society, and features in many club names across former Soviet states in Eastern Europe such as Dynamo Kyiv, Dinamo Bucharest, and Dinamo Zagreb.

Fun facts:

Shepshed as it's name suggests has a history of being in the wool industry (formerly named Sheepshead). Current Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall grew up in Shepshed.

Directions from Nuneaton town centre:

Take the A47 to the A5 via The Long Shoot. Follow the A5 south to the M69, then take the M69 north, joining the M1 north at it's end near Leicester. Follow the M1 to J23, take the slip road and then turn left onto the A512 Ashby Road East towards Shepshed. At the traffic lights turn right onto Leicester Road towards the town centre, and after the Esso garage turn right at the roundabout onto Forest Street. After the road turns to the left take a right after the Black Swan pub into Butthole Lane, and the ground is at the end.

Public transport:

Take the 11:09 to Birmingham New Street, arriving at 11:38, then the 11:49 to Nottingham arriving at Long Eaton at 12:45, and then the Skylink bus to Coalville at 12:57, arriving at Shepshed bull ring at 13:34. It is then a short walk to the ground via Queen Street, Church Side and Church Gate to Butthole Lane.

Returning, take the 17:19 Skylink to Nottingham, arriving at Long Eaton station at 18:03, then take the 18:11 to Crewe arriving at Derby at 18:21, then the 18:31 to Plymouth arriving at Tamworth at 18:48, then the 18:56 to London Euston arriving at Nuneaton at 19:10.
