Nuneaton Town look to make it three wins on the spin as they make a long Monday night trip to Cambridgeshire to face St Ives Town.

Two victories against sides who at kick off were in the play off places in Shepshed Dynamo and Grantham Town, have seen them have to win both ugly and with style, and either could be on the cards as they face a side who sit 20th in the table (ahead of Saturday) and have struggled since their relegation from the Southern League Premier Central last season. They have picked up just 7 points in their opening 9 games, with a win over Sutton Coldfield Town in game two, an away draw at Grantham, and last Monday’s home win over fellow strugglers Corby Town following a change of manager. 

It is set to be a poignant first return to the ground where on 13th January 2024, Nuneaton Borough played their final ever game. Boro’s threadbare squad bravely lost out 3-0 that day, a result later expunged from the records, as they officially resigned from competitive football in the following days as debts mounted following their removal from Liberty Way.

With a free Saturday to rest up and train following Bedworth’s home draw in the FA Trophy seeing the Corby home game postponed, Nuneaton will be fresh and ready to go again on Monday.

About our opponents:

Formed in 1887, the club played amateur football up until the 1950s where they joined the United Counties League, returning to it in division 1 in 1985. They gained promotion to the Premier Division in 2005 after a play off win, and after three straight FA Vase 5th Round appearances in the late 00s they reached the quarter finals in 2011-12. That boost saw them promoted from the Premier Division the following season, reaching the Southern League Division 1 Central and Step 4 football for the first time. They defeated AFC Rushden & Diamonds in 2016 to be promoted to Step 3 for the first time, playing in the Southern Premier Division Central for 10 seasons, before finishing 19th last season causing them to be relegated for the first time in half a century. They play in the Northern Premier League for the first time this season, in Division 1 Midlands.

Fun Facts:

Conor Washington, who scored twice against Nuneaton for Matlock Town in the FA Trophy, started his career at St Ives Town before going on to play in the Football League and for Northern Ireland. 

St Ives is named after St Ivo, a Cornish bishop whose remains were discovered in 1001 in Slepe, which was renamed in his honour after attracting pilgrims. Many often confuse the town with the Cornish St Ives, which is named after St Ia of Cornwall and has no connection.

Oliver Cromwell was a resident of the town between 1631 and 1636 at Old Slepe Hall, and a statue of him is in the town centre.

Entrepreneur Sir Clive Sinclair invented the first pocket calculator in 1972, the Sinclair Executive, in the Old Mill in the town, which is now flats.

Directions from Nuneaton town centre:

Take the A444 south to the M6, then join the M6 towards London, joining the A14 towards Kettering at its end. Follow the A14 to J21 at Huntingdon, then take the A141 around the town. Upon reaching the BP garage at the 7th roundabout, go straight on to join the A1123 Huntingdon Road signposted St Ives. Upon reaching the main crossroads in the centre of the town, turn right into Ramsey Road, then after Slepe Hall turn right into Westwood Road, and at the end of the road is the car park for the leisure centre and football ground, which is on the right. (70 miles, approx 1h25m)

Public transport:

Due to the distance and it being an evening game, public transport is not available for this fixture. There is no train station in St Ives.
