After 3 long weeks of away trips, Nuneaton Town finally return to The Oval on Tuesday night to face 2nd placed Wellingborough Town, as the tricky start to September continues.

After watching their FA Cup and FA Trophy runs end on consecutive Saturdays to Bromsgrove Sporting and Matlock Town respectively, focus is now fully on the league for the time being, as Nuneaton look to notch a 3rd win in 6 games. However its a tough prospect as Wellingborough have won all 5 games so far, with only Rugby Borough keeping them off the top by virtue of having played 3 more. Those 5 wins have come against Bourne Town, Basford United, Boston Town, Rugby Borough and St Ives Town. Nuneaton have beaten Coleshill Town and Carlton Town, and have lost to Mickleover, AFC Rushden & Diamonds, and Sutton Coldfield Town so far.

Nuneaton and Wellingborough meet for the first time since one of the darkest days in football, Saturday 15th April 1989, the date of the Hillsborough disaster.

About our opponents:

The original Wellingborough Town were formed in 1867, and became the first team to play under floodlights in 1879. They moved to playing fields behind the Dog & Duck pub in 1901, where they remain today, that pub is now closed but the name survives with the ground. There was a brief change of name to Wellingborough Redwell in the 1910s. The club folded in 2002 however, with a new club forming in 2005, and the old ground saved. The club played in the United Counties Leagues until promotion in 2023-24, and this is now their 3rd season in the NPL Division 1 Midlands. Notable former players include former Liverpool man Phil Neal, West Ham's record goalscorer Vic Watson, and former Jamaica international Trevor Benjamin.

The 'Doughboys' nickname is set to come from a local speciality 'Ock n Dough, a pastry containing bacon, onions and carrots, with a pub in the town being named after it.
