Nuneaton Town return to The Oval on Bank Holiday Monday and return to their league campaign after rattling in 8 goals in a rampant win at Highgate United in the FA Vase on Saturday afternoon.

The opponents trying to prevent Nuneaton Town from extending a perfect 5 wins out of 5 start to the league season are Yaxley, a team from the outskirts of Peterborough. It will be the first ever meeting between Yaxley and a Nuneaton Town/Borough side.

Yaxley have had an inconsistent start to the season, picking up 1 win, 3 draws and 1 defeat from their first 5, whilst also being knocked out of the FA Cup and FA Vase by Hucknall Town and Framlingham Town respectively. Their only win so far this season came against Moulton in a 1-0 home win.

Nuneaton have racked up 21 goals in just 7 games in all competitions, conceding 6. The FA Cup defeat to Step 4 Coleshill Town being the only blot on a winning machine that has found the climb up to Step 5 very comfortable so far. And with nearest rivals Daventry Town, also on a 100% start albeit with one game less played, not playing until Tuesday night, its a chance to put the pressure back on at the top, so a large crowd on a sunny bank holiday afternoon (sometimes sunny and bank holiday do go together!) would really help the team push on.

History:

Yaxley, known as The Cuckoos, were formed in 1962 and became Yaxley British Legion a year later. Playing in the Peterborough and District League, they were promoted to Division 1 in 1971 and dropped British Legion from their name.

They were founder members of the Eastern Counties League Division 1 in 1988, and briefly changed name to Clarksteel Yaxley in 1990. Due to ground issues they were expelled from the ECL in 1992. Having moved to a new ground that was up to standard they were promoted back to the UCL in 1995, and reached the Premier Division after 2 seasons.

Yaxley won the UCL Premier in 2018, and were promoted to Step 4 for the first time, playing in the Southern League Division 1 Central, transferring to the Northern Premier League Division 1 Midlands in 2021. During 2022-23 Sammy Mould at the age of 20 became the youngest ever manager in English football, but he couldn't prevent relegation, and Yaxley went back to the United Counties Premier for 2023-24 where they remain.
