Statement Win as Town Beat the Millers - Match Report: Carlton Town 0 NTFC 2

By Owen Jephcote

Nuneaton Town secured their first win at Step 4 with an impressive 2–0 victory away at Carlton Town, with both goals arriving in a strong first-half display.

The hosts threatened first on 12 minutes, exploiting Nuneaton down the left-hand side before a low driven ball was played across goal towards Ashley Chambers, but it flashed past everyone and went behind for a goal kick.

Nuneaton responded and took the lead in the 15th minute through James Armson. The experienced midfielder received the ball in open space and saw his first effort saved, but he reacted quickest to the loose ball and rolled it into the net.

Carlton had their first corner on 19 minutes, but Nuneaton’s defence dealt with the danger. Four minutes later, Luke Softley rose to meet a free-kick and headed towards goal, although there was nobody following up to turn the opportunity into a second.

Nuneaton would double their advantage on 33 minutes. Terry Atem held off the Carlton left-back as he made his way into the box before finding Armson. The captain then laid the ball off for former Coventry City man Bradley Stretton, who smashed his effort into the back of the net to make it 2–0.

Carlton continued to look for a response before the interval, with Chambers putting an effort wide on 28 minutes. Harry Chesterton had already been booked on 13 minutes, while Aaron Roberts was shown a yellow card in first-half stoppage time.

Half-time: Carlton Town 0–2 Nuneaton Town

The hosts came out looking to reduce the deficit after the restart and created a couple of good opportunities.

On 48 minutes, a Carlton corner was sent towards the near post before being flicked on towards the far post, where a Boro header denied them a clear-cut opportunity.

Carlton came even closer on 58 minutes when a first-time effort from around three yards at the back post was put wide.

The home side once again threatened from a corner just after the hour mark, with Chambers meeting the delivery at the back post but heading wide.

With a stoppage in play, Town made a double substitution with Terry Atem and Eesa Sawyers making way for Jay Snook and Liam Murphy. Caine Elliott was then withdrawn on 69 minutes, with Corey Currithers taking his place.

Nuneaton continued to defend their advantage effectively. Another Town yellow card with ten minutes to go was followed by Bradley Stretton being replaced by Stuart Hendrie.

Carlton continued to push but could not find a way through. On 88 minutes, Josh Green produced a calm, collected header back towards his goalkeeper at the back post.

Carlton almost halved the deficit in the closing stages when excellent build-up play created an opening for Chambers on 90 minutes, but his effort went wide.

There was one final change in stoppage time, with James Harrison replacing Charlie Jones after Jones took a knock. Three minutes of added time were played before the final whistle confirmed a deserved Nuneaton victory.
