Neeks Double Keeps Towns Unbeaten Streak Alive - Match Report: Nuneaton Town 2 Godmanchester Rovers 2

By George Kirk

Nuneaton Town remain unbeaten in the league, securing a hard fought draw, thanks to an inspired performance from striker Danico Johnson, bagging twice.

Despite struggling in the league, the Goddy proved to be a tough test, forcing the Town to comeback from two-one down, with the equaliser coming in the 92nd minute.

Acco and Doddsy’s men almost nicked it at the death, as a barrage of chances came their way, but were unable to convert.

Kick-Off

Nuneaton started the game on the front foot, with new signing Alex Lock, putting the visitors under pressure with his pace and power going forward.

The Town debutant almost found himself on the score sheet only minutes into his debut, just missing out on a trademark Callum Carsley cross.

The home side would continue to gain momentum, as Declan Somel forced Goddy shot stopper Ben Wescott into a decent save, from a Danico Johnson knockdown.

After a dominant start, Acco and Doddsy’s men would take the lead, when in the 15th minute Kai Thomas whipped in a delightful ball that Danico Johnson tapped home.

This was a real wake up call for the away side, who took control of possession, having a positive spell in play, but were unable to create any clear cut chances.

Before half-time, Somel nearly grabbed a second forcing Wescott into another top save, just before the referee made a controversial decision allowing play to commence with loud shouts for a penalty after a believed handball.

There was almost even more uproar when two minutes later, Rover’s number nine, Craig Gillies was found free at the back post, fortunately heading just wide.

Half Time: Nuneaton Town 1-0 Godmanchester Rovers

Not long after the restart, Town came close to doubling their advantage, as non-league veteran Stuart Hendrie was handed a gift from six-yards out, somehow missing the target.

It wouldn’t take long for Goddy to punish the home side for their wastefulness, when in the 56th minute Ben Seymour-Shove drilled hard and low into the bottom corner, following a defensive meltdown.

Things would go from bad to worse fourteen minutes later, as Godmanchester hit the home side with another sucker punch, seeing Skipper Gillies make up for his earlier miss to convert in the 70th minute.

Nuneaton would respond by throwing the kitchen sink at their opponents, who sat back and defended resiliently throwing bodies on the line to clear goal bound efforts on multiple occasions.

Despite their resilience, the away side would eventually be broken down late on, as Johnson was their yet again to haunt the visitors, nodding in from a delightful chipped cross from substitute Eesa Sawyers in the 92nd minute.

In the remaining time, Nuneaton would continue to huff and puff, bombarding the Goddy goal, but on this occasion would be unable to blow the house down, with the visitors staying resolute and holding onto a valuable point.
