Treasurer Report - September 2025
September turned out to be another busy month for the Boro, with six matches in total — three at home and three away — spread across the league and cup competitions. From a financial perspective, we recorded a small operating deficit, but this was fully in line with expectations and reflects the normal pattern of the season as we continue to invest in growth on and off the pitch. Income from attendances and commercial activity continues to move in the right direction, helped by some encouraging crowds and a real sense of momentum continuing to build around the club.
The figures tell a positive story. Average league attendance rose to 505 in September, up from 478 in August, giving us a season-to-date average of 492. The biggest crowd of the month came in the 4–0 home win over Northampton Sileby Rangers, when 536 fans turned out to support the team.
The most pleasing trend is the 30% increase in young fans coming through the gates. That’s a huge boost for the club’s future — the next generation of supporters, volunteers, and even players. It’s great to see more families and young people around the ground, adding colour and energy to every matchday. I’ve spoken personally to a number of families attending matches for the first time this season. The common theme is that parents were unsure whether their children would enjoy it, but they brought them along and you can guess the rest! I’m sure many of you started your journey as a Boro fan in a similar way.
The team produced some strong performances throughout the month. Home form remained excellent, including that big win over Northampton Sileby Rangers and another convincing result against Moulton. Away from home, a battling draw at Aylestone Park and a hard-fought 2–1 win at Knowle in the FA Vase were real highlights, with the Vase victory also bringing in a useful share of gate receipts. The only real setback came in the Birmingham Senior Cup against Dudley Town. Furthermore, the Birmingham Senior Cup rules means that the gate receipts must be shared with the opposition and combined with the additional cost of hiring the Oval for another game, the club made a loss from this fixture. This was despite the excellent attendance of 243.
Financially, we continue to perform broadly to plan. The slight deficit this month was expected, as discussed in previous reports, we broadly expect a deficit between August and April of around £20,000 to £30,000, funded by the Season Ticket and sponsorship income collected in June and July. The scale of the deficit is partly influenced by you, in terms of the level of support, and partly influenced by progression in knock-out competitions.
A major positive development this month was the club’s decision to put Kyle Jardine on contract. Kyle has been in outstanding form since joining, scoring 13 goals in 14 games, and quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting players in non-league football. Securing him on a deal through to summer 2027 (with an option to extend) rewards his contribution and shows our intent to build a competitive squad for the long term.
As Treasurer, I want to stress that this decision was made within the club’s existing playing budget — it doesn’t change our overall financial plan, but it does underline our ambition. Bringing Kyle in on contract sends a strong message that Nuneaton Town is serious about progress, both on and off the pitch, whilst operating sustainably and responsibly.
The Nuneaton Town Supporters Co-operative continues to help drive the club forward, fulfilling its role as joint custodian of the club along with the Nuneaton Business Football Community. The great work by Jim Whitmore has led to a groundswell of memberships, up to 225. This is a fantastic achievement, but Jim is not resting – 225 is remarkably low for a co-operative that has a controlling interest in a football club, and therefore is working on initiatives to engage with supporters as to why it’s important to join the co-operative to influence both its and the club’s direction. To join, please see Jim on matchdays on the NTSC table, or : join the Nuneaton Town Supporters Co-operative online here.
The Nuneaton Town Supporters Co-operative’s 200 Club has also seen record growth – up to 219 players! This is continuing to help the cub financially, with the proceeds being donated on a monthly basis. To put it in perspective, one months proceed equates to roughly half the gate receipts one game. Again, if you want to support this initiative, and win some great cash prizes, join the 200 Club here.
Sponsorship and Matchday Opportunities
We’ve had a brilliant response to the article last month, where I highlighted that we still had 14 home & away player sponsorships available – all 14 were purchased by Barry Jordan and his family, £1,750 in all. I’m sure we would all like to thank Barry for this amazing gesture.
There are also matchday sponsorship opportunities available for our home games. This is a great chance for local businesses to reach potential customers—your business name on matchday graphics across social media will reach 10,000–30,000 local people, plus thousands more beyond. Sponsorship also includes a matchday experience with VIP access for you and five guests. The match experience package includes VIP access for two guests, which can be scaled up for larger balcony groups available for special occasions such as Birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations. Expenditure
In September, we incurred £18,151 in direct costs, covering:
Contractual pay to management
Five weeks of players’ wages and expenses
The cost of merchandise sold.
Matchday travel costs.
Additional hire of the Oval for the Birmingham Senior Cup game
Other matchday expenses
Administrative expenses were £201, including:
Website hosting
Subscription to Xero
Payroll processing
Transaction fees (SumUp & Stripe)
Operation 600
As discussed above, the attendances during September have pushed us up towards the 500-mark, and with some huge games on the horizon, we will hopefully break that barrier before long. However, an average of 600 for league attendances is still some way off and we need your help to spread the word. I know of many Boro fans who haven’t taken the step to come and watch us at The Oval yet, but I also know that those who have taken the step have been pleasantly surprised by the experience, both in terms of the facilities at The Oval and the entertaining football.
We recorded a monthly deficit of £1,343, driven by five weeks of playing costs, some long away trips and the loss incurred from playing the Birmingham Senior Cup game at home. This was a better financial performance than in August due to the better balance of home and away matches, plus the income from the Vase and League Cup away matches.
What to expect in September
October brings another full calendar, including five league matches and two cup fixtures. We’ve got Godmanchester Rovers and, of course, a huge local derby against Hinckley AFC at home — a match that’s sure to attract one of our biggest crowds of the season. Away trips to Easington Sports, Daventry Town, and Northampton ON Chenecks will keep the squad busy, while the FA Vase tie at Stafford Town carries a potential £825 prize fund for the winners, plus a share of the gate receipts. However, the balance for matches in the month is heavily weighted towards away games so it will be another month with an operating deficit. Should we have a decent attendance in the derby game, and progress in the Vase, we may keep the deficit down to around £1,500, but either way it’s purely down to the way the fixture fall, something beyond our control, and is both expected and planned for.
It promises to be another exciting month, and with your continued support — both in the stands and behind the scenes — we’re confident of keeping that momentum going.
Back to Nuneaton Update
During June, the fund increased by £2,634 and now stands at £66,458 raised. Of this, the majority game from excess gate receipts and the remainder from supporter donations.
Following our meeting in August, the council have completed their own pre-planning report on the preferred site, which did not highlight any new issues beyond those identified in the FWP feasibility study. The council have not yet progressed our request for a long lease on the site, which will be a necessity for us to be able to seek funding. This is something that will be followed up during October. However, we have been briefing various funding bodies about the project, and we have arranged a meeting with the Football Foundation in early November.
It's essential that as a wider club do all we can to accelerate the growth of the “Back to Nuneaton” fund, not only to be able to fund the planning stage of the project but to show commitment to those external parties who will be reviewing our funding applications. The best way of doing this is to attend matches.
If anyone else would like to make a donation, small or large, to the “Back to Nuneaton” fund, you can do so here or by emailing mailto:finance@nuneatontownfc.co.uk
