Nuneaton Town go into their fourth league game on Tuesday night off the back of winning their first three and being only off the top of the table by one less goal scored. A tough test is expected though as they meet local rivals Atherstone Town in the North Warwickshire Derby.
Atherstone themselves have had a solid start and sit 3rd in the table on 7 points, having had good 4-1 and 1-0 wins over Godmanchester Rovers and Eynesbury Rovers respectively, only dropping points to Aylestone Park in a 2-2 draw after leading 2-0 at half time. The Adders have also set up a tasty FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Bedworth United this Saturday at the Oval after beating Westfields 4-2 in the previous round.
The Adders need no introduction to Nuneaton fans, as teams from Atherstone and Nuneaton have locked horns several times over the years.
Like Nuneaton Town, Atherstone Town have also been through various reformations. The original Atherstone Town was formed in 1887 milling around various midlands regional leagues before folding in 1979. Atherstone United immediately took their place, and had their heyday in the 1990s, as they reached the Southern Premier Division, and reached the FA Cup 2nd Round in 1990-91, losing to Crewe Alexandra.
They folded again midway through the 2003-04 season becoming Atherstone Town once again, and earned 2 promotions in 3 seasons to reach the Southern League Division 1 Midlands, where they faced the reformed Nuneaton Town in 2008-09. Leamington won the division, but Nuneaton and Atherstone would both reach the play offs. Chasetown beat Atherstone 5-0 but lost to Nuneaton Town in the final 1-0.
They had been in the Midland Football League for 10 years but switched to the United Counties for the first time this season.
