Nuneaton Town make a third and hopefully final attempt at the longest trip of the season as they look to secure the United Counties League Premier Division South title, making the 'march to March in March' once again, after the original game in January was postponed, and the second attempt two and a half weeks ago was abandoned.
On Saturday 14th March, the home side had come from behind to lead 2-1 into stoppage time, however with a Nuneaton fan taken ill, the referee had no option but to abandon the game, and the United Counties League made the decision to replay the game, which March decided not to appeal. So it means a long Tuesday night trip for the Town faithful with the title up for grabs. A quirk of the fixtures means Nuneaton play the rest of the top 4 in just 6 days, so will be looking to make sure those below have no opportunity to further delay or even deny Town's promotion.
Nuneaton had the first opportunity to win the title on Saturday, although to do that they needed to win and Atherstone drop points to complete the job. However neither of those prerequisites happened, and Nuneaton had the nightmare first half, going in 2-0 down in tough conditions. However they fought back in the second half with a Carsley penalty and a Harrison effort for a crucial point which means only 3 more are required. A win at March, or a point at home in the North Warwickshire derby next Saturday will see Nuneaton go up as champions for the second successive season.
March Town United, known as The Hares in reference to the March Hare from Alice in Wonderland, sit in 4th in the league and have recovered from a post-Christmas wobble to be unbeaten in 4, including a draw against Atherstone that was useful for Nuneaton's title hopes. They still look in a good position to reach the play offs, being 5 points clear of 6th with 4 to play plus 2 games in hand.
March's home form remains strong with 11 wins 3 draws and 2 defeats and just 11 goals conceded, the best home defensive record in the league. They haven't lost at home since a shock home defeat to GNG Oadby Town in September.
Nuneaton haven't lost away in the league since their own shock defeat to Easington Sports, a run of 10 away games unbeaten. Due to the original March game not completing, an unbeaten run in the league is still going and is now at 17 for Nuneaton after Saturday's draw, and have still yet to taste defeat in the league in 2026.
March's dangerous wingers Florian Tsaguim and Rio Henson lead the scoring with 19 and 16 goals respectively, while striker Toby Allen chips in with 10, so the Nuneaton defence will need to be on their toes.
In form striker Kyle Jardine reached 50 goal involvements for the season in the last home game, and will be looking to get closer to a 40 goal debut season for the club. Charlie Jones remains suspended, but otherwise Nuneaton should have a full squad to choose from.
It's set to be another huge clash in Cambridgeshire, can Nuneaton March their way to the title?
