Town Comeback to Grab Vital Point in Cambridgeshire - Match Report: Godmanchester Rovers 2 Nuneaton Town 2
By George Kirk
Nuneaton Town edge one step closer to title triumph, earning a hard fought point away at mid-table Godmanchester Rovers. The home side proved to be a tough test for the Town, capitalising on mistakes at the back, going into the break two goals ahead, as Boro struggled to adapt to the state of the pitch and wind.
In the second half, Nuneaton fought hard with Callum Carsley converting from the penalty spot, and James Harrison powering in to level the scoring. A crucial point for the Town, who need just one more win to claim back-to-back title triumphs.
Kick-Off:
As the game kicked off, many fans who had been drinking in Godmanchester Town centre were questioning whether the coach had taken a wrong turn, as it looked like Nuneaton were playing on the beach due to some large sand patches were scattered all over the pitch.
This was exemplified when Town had an early chance, Aaron Williams was found in the box, hitting the ball in one of the divots, sending sand flying in the air. It’s fair to say from this moment, Boro knew they were in for a challenging afternoon.
After a Kyle Jardine strike from distance was palmed away by Max Rigby, things went from bad to worse for both sides, with strong winds making it an absolute nightmare for both teams to play any proper football.
Fortunately for the home side, the wind blew in their favour, growing into the game forcing Brandon Bache into a smart save at his near post, and then taking the lead in the 23rd minute, with Ben Seymour-Shove who previously scored in the reverse fixture haunting again, breaking through the back to slot under Bache.
Things would go from bad to worse just before half-time, when Jonny Hall was “Jonny on the spot” in the 37th minute, firing into the bottom corner.
Half-Time: Godmanchester Rovers 2-0 Nuneaton Town
Boro started the second half like a bull out of the gate, grabbing a penalty not long after the restart due to a foul on Recci in the box. After a short delay for an injury, Callum Carsley stepped up and fired Town back in the game, slotting just under the keeper's left hand. From then on it was one way traffic, as Eesa Sawyers showed confidence and quality on the ball, curling an effort just over and setting up Jardine who scuffed just wide.
In the 73rd minute, Sawyers was finally rewarded for his hard work, working the ball to the back-post, where James Harrison slotted in the equaliser. Nuneaton came agonisingly close to a winner eight minutes later, when top scorer Jardine lobbed over the Rovers keeper, with the ball landing on top of the net. Jardine had one more chance to snatch a winner in added time, but would be denied by a decent save from the Goddy keeper.
A decent point for both sides, that puts Nuneaton Town within touching distance of raising the league title.
