Treasurer’s update for Feb 26
February continued the strong momentum of the season on the pitch, with another excellent run of results that saw the club recognised by the United Counties League as Team of the Month.
Across the seven fixtures played during the month, the team recorded six wins and one draw, maintaining our position firmly at the head of the promotion race and continuing the positive atmosphere around the club.
The month began with a 2–0 away victory at Oadby Town, followed by a convincing 4–0 home win over Bugbrooke St Michaels in front of 494 supporters. A goalless draw away at Lutterworth Town was followed by another excellent performance with a 3–1 win away at promotion rivals Histon.
At home, supporters then witnessed a dramatic UCL Sports Ground Development Cup Quarter Final against Grantham Town, finishing 3–3 after some late heroics before the Town progressed on penalties. The final home game of the month saw a 3–1 win against Northampton ON Chenecks, before February concluded with a 5–0 victory away at Yaxley.
February also saw our Fans Forum take place, with updates regarding Back to Nuneaton, the Supporters Co-op initiatives, commercial updates and of course, a financial update from myself which highlighted the financial challenges we face if we play at Step 4 next season. Thanks must go to The Crew/Queens Hall for hosting the event.
You can read a summary of the updates, along with managers thoughts for next season here.
The three home fixtures produced attendances of 494, 417 and 401, giving an average attendance of 437 for the month.
Operation 600
February is traditionally one of the most challenging months of the season for attendances. The combination of winter weather, mid-season fatigue and the long gap between January and February paydays tends to result in a natural dip in crowd numbers across the non-league pyramid.
The reduction in average attendance during the month was therefore very much in line with expectations, and although it inevitably impacts matchday revenue in the short term, the overall season average remains significantly ahead of last season and exceeds four out of the last five seasons at Liberty Way.
Despite the average attendance dipping to 556, the 600 target is still a possibility, but would maintaining the average attendance throughout March and a gate of at least 1,500 against Atherstone in our final league match in April. This will allow us to hit our target in terms of contribution to the Back to Nuneaton fund through gate receipts for the season.
Sponsorship and Matchday Opportunities
Commercial engagement continues to grow as the season progresses, with increasing interest from local businesses looking to associate themselves with the club’s continued rise both on and off the pitch. Lee Davies is already hard at work on the 2026/27 season sponsorship packages, and has already got several sponsors on board, both new and old. I’ll update you further on this in the update for March.
We still have match sponsorship packages available for upcoming fixtures, offering a fantastic opportunity for businesses to promote themselves while enjoying a memorable matchday experience.
We have some exciting and cost-effective tailored packages designed for businesses of all sizes. If interested, contact Lee Davies at commercial@nuneatontownfc.co.uk.
Expenditure
During February, the club continued to incur its normal operational costs, including:
Contractual payments to management
Player wages and expenses
Cost of merchandise sold.
Matchday operational expenses
Administrative costs remained minimal and included:
Website hosting
Subscription to Xero
Payroll processing
Transaction fees (SumUp & Stripe)
February produced a net deficit (loss) of £4,615, which was driven by the expected seasonal reduction in attendances and matchday revenue. Of this, £4,115 was from operating activities and £500 was related to the “Back to Nuneaton” project expenditure.
Lower attendances during the winter months directly affect several income streams, including gate receipts & matchday spending. This seasonal effect is well understood and was anticipated within the club’s financial planning.
Merchandise sales have dropped off from their simply astonishing figures over the Christmas period, but are still ticking along nicely, down to Richard Dean and his seemingly endless supply of one-off coats and gillets! Andy Pace is also doing a more than fair trade in old programmes from the pool table.
Despite the monthly deficit, the club’s year-to-date financial position remains very strong, with a surplus of £35,947 generated so far this season.
As previously outlined, our financial objective remains to operate as close to cost neutral as possible during the playing season, ensuring that sponsorship income and season ticket revenue generated during the summer can be directed towards the Back to Nuneaton project.
Cash Position
The club continues to maintain a healthy cash position, but the lower attendances saw a net outflow (monies out compare to monies in) for the month of £10,000. The overall cash balance stands at £92,000, which is an excellent position to be in at this point of the season.
As always, it is worth remembering that the reported surplus and the actual cash position differ due to:
VAT liabilities on most income streams
PAYE deductions payable to HMRC
Timing differences between income received and costs recognised.
What to expect in March
March presents a busy and important month both on and off the pitch, with a balanced mix of home and away fixtures alongside a significant cup tie.
We begin the month at home against Daventry Town FC, before making the trip to March Town United FC the following weekend. The standout fixture of the month is the UCL Cup Semi Final at home to Coalville Town FC, which represents a major opportunity to reach a final and should generate strong interest and attendance, despite being an evening kick-off.
The league campaign continues with a home fixture against Eynesbury Rovers FC, before rounding off the month with an away trip to Godmanchester Rovers FC.
With three home fixtures across the month, including a high-profile cup semi-final, March provides a good opportunity to recover some of the ground lost in February in terms of attendance and matchday revenue. However, as seen previously, evening fixtures can impact crowd numbers, and cup matches may also involve different financial arrangements compared to standard league fixtures.
From a financial perspective, the month has the potential to return closer to a breakeven position, provided attendances remain strong. Continued supporter backing will therefore be key.
On the pitch, March could prove decisive. Progression in the cup alongside maintaining league form would further build momentum heading into the final weeks of the season.
Back to Nuneaton Update
February saw further important progress behind the scenes on the stadium development project.
Our engineering consultants BEK are currently collaborating with the council to obtain the necessary permit to conduct ground investigation works on the proposed site. These works will involve taking ten samples from small boreholes in areas where construction is likely to take place.
The purpose of these investigations is to determine whether historic landfill activity or former mine workings could have any impact on the development.
Before granting permission, the council will review BEK’s proposed methodology to ensure it meets their standards.
This stage is an important step in progressing the project from planning towards eventual construction and helps ensure that any ground-related risks are identified and addressed at an early stage.
Further updates will be provided as soon as the investigations are approved and scheduled.
