Nuneaton Town bounced back in style on Tuesday evening to show what they are made of as they swept aside Moulton for a second time this season to haul themselves back to the summit.
A shock defeat in the FA Vase on Saturday threatened to derail Nuneaton's season and questions were asked as to whether they could keep up the pace at the top, with March Town United going top of the table at the same time. However an Eesa Sawyers hattrick and a second half header from Kyle Jardine ensured those questions were answered, for now, emphatically.
Captain Corey Currithers returned to the starting 11 having been suspended at the weekend, while Eesa Sawyers also made a start after coming on as a sub in Saturday's game.
In blustery conditions in the wake of Storm Bram, it was Nuneaton who had the best of the early minutes, looking to prove themselves capable of continuing their title challenge. And it didn't take long to get in front, a Moulton throw in was won back and Kyle Jardine played James Harrison through down the left wing, and his excellent low ball pinged across the box saw Sawyers use his pace to sprint onto it and slam it into the back of the net for the opening goal (1-0).
It could have been two in the first 11 minutes as Sawyers tried to turn provider for Declan Somel, but he sliced his effort at the back post wide trying to hit it across the Moulton keeper.
Moulton had their best early chance on 16 minutes as the wind caught their first corner, but Nuneaton managed to scramble it away.
And it became 2 for Nuneaton halfway through the first half, as Jardine took advantage of a defender playing him onside, as he went through on goal, but surprisingly chose not to score himself and instead unselfishly squared for Sawyers to have the easier finish, and he made no mistake (2-0).
The rest of the half became a midfield battle as Nuneaton tried to preserve their clean sheet whilst also trying to get more opportunities.
A comical moment in the half came when Brandon Bache took a goal kick and the wind caught it mid air and it hit the video camera square in the face. (Look out for that in the highlights/interviews!)
Moulton missed a great chance on 41 minutes as a ball across the box was sliced wide, and their 11 got in behind in stoppage time but also curled wide, but Nuneaton survived the half.
Half time: Moulton 0-2 Nuneaton Town
The early second half minutes happened much like the late first half minutes, with Moulton desperate to get themselves back in the game but Nuneaton dealing with everything. The away side found their best tactic for the half in winning corners in the windy conditions, and on 65 minutes it worked as Carsley's near post corner found Jardine to head in at the near post to all but seal the win (3-0).
That allowed Jardine to get a few minutes rest at the end, with utility man Aaron Brown tried up top. Cody Mullan also replaced Currithers a few minutes later, and the Carsley corners nearly created again as Brown did the same as Jardine albeit his effort was blocked, and Charlie Jones unfortunately got under the ball on the rebound and blazed over. Brown nearly got his goal 3 minutes later as he headed inches over from another one.
Two final subs saw Danico Johnson and Aaron Williams replace James Harrison and Declan Somel, with 8 minutes left, and in stoppage time Johnson found his opposite wing in stoppage time with a delicious cross to the back post which Sawyers headed powerfully goalwards, and the keeper was unable to keep it from crossing the line, completing a well deserved hattrick for the winger (4-0).
A huge win on the road, and much needed, as Nuneaton continue to fend off the challenge of March ahead of their meeting in January. Nuneaton can now look forward to Saturday, aiming to avenge their 3-0 away defeat to Easington Sports at The Oval on Saturday, whilst Moulton will probably be glad to see the back of Nuneaton this season having scored 0 and conceded 9 across the two games, having also lost by 5 at The Oval.
